Federal Reserve Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority lowered interest rates on Wednesday, representing the second reduction this year during economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Decision Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank

The decision to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Changes

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Inflation has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the closure.

Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions

The Fed usually analyzes BLS data to determine labor market conditions, including the count of new jobs added to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in the previous month.

The figure of jobs added to the market in August was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Indicate Ongoing Slowdown

Though the bureau was set to release September’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its publication once the closure began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the business segment cut 32,000 jobs in last month, a indication that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman said recently, which he had previously attributed comes from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Reveals Gradual Rise

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still issued its price statistics for September that showed that costs are going up, although gradually. Costs increased 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target inflation rate is 2%.
